DATE: October 5-7, 1997
LOCATION: Costa Mesa, CA
To SCEC Scientists and Friends,
The 1997 SCEC annual meeting will be held October 5-7 at the Doubletree Hotel in Costa Mesa, California. The preliminary meeting agenda follows. Highlights of this year's meeting include:
1. A field trip on Sunday, the 5th, led by Lisa Grant, Karl Mueller, and Eldon Gath. The field trip will focus on the geomorphic and structural analysis of the San Joaquin Hills in Orange County, California.
Field Trip Abstract. The San Joaquin Hills are a northwesterly elongated anticlinal structure, onto which eight marine terraces have been mapped. Although an uplift rate of 0.25 mm/yr has been calculated for the San Joaquin Hills along the coast, neither the spatial pattern of this uplift, nor the uplifting mechanism were previously determined. This year's SCEC field trip will explore this area, discussing the preliminary research findings of Lisa Grant, Karl Mueller, George Kennedy, Roz Munro, and Eldon Gath. The trip will visit exposures of late Quaternary marine terrace deposits, where we will discuss the on-going efforts to date the deposits using corals and U-series dating. We will visit and discuss the implications of the Newport Back Bay, an ancestral course of the Santa Ana River, including evidence for Holocene deformation of the abandoned channel. The trip will conclude with a discussion of what we know, what we infer, and what it means to our understanding of the seismic risk from the (possible) southerly extension of the Compton-Los Alamitos struture specifically, and for southern Orange County in general.
2. Posters focused on results of SCEC sponsored research. We will organize posters along disciplinary groups this year.
3. A presentation on the SCIGN program by Yehuda Bock.
4. A presentation of the main results of the Phase III study by Dave Jackson, Norm Abrahamson, and the authors of the Phase III report. The objective of the Phase III report is to address outstanding scientific and engineering issues related to seismic hazard analysis. In particular, the Phase III report focuses on issues related to the incorporation of site response into hazard maps. The generation of hazard maps with site response requires the integration of scientific information from geologists, seismologists, and geotechnical engineers. Seismic hazard analysis is an interdisciplinary problem that provides a useful framework to bring together these different disciplines to produce self-consistent models.
5. The interdisciplinary group sessions will be run in series.
6. A half day session on Tuesday morning to discuss the scientific goals for the new science and technology center proposal due next year. The preproposal is due January 6, 1998 and, if selected to compete, the full proposal is due September 1, 1998. The SCEC Steering Committee has had discussions on this submission and invited colleagues from Northern California to join this new proposal. Northern California colleagues will be invited to the meeting. More on this session will be forthcoming from the directors.
7. The SCEC Advisory Council will attend this meeting.
8. The after dinner speaker on Monday night will be Arch Johnston of CERI, Memphis. His talk is "Dissecting the New Madrid Earthquakes."
9. A meeting of the ROSRINE working group on Tuesday afternoon.
