Two New SCEC "Core" Institutions Appoint Board Members

The SCEC Board of Directors met in late January and voted to add the University of Nevada at Reno and San Diego State University as core institutions. We welcome new board representatives John Anderson (UNR) and Tom Rockwell (SDSU).

John Anderson, professor of geophysics, will represent UNR on the board of directors. UNR has been a participating institution of SCEC since it was formed. Anderson's research interests include aspects of engineering seismology, including applications of geological and seismological information to estimate seismicity and seismic hazards; recording strong ground motions; understanding the physics of near-source ground motions; and applications to engineering problems.

Tom Rockwell is an earthquake geologist whose studies focus on paleoseismology, fault slip rate studies, and long-term patterns of earthquake occurrence. He has conducted studies along many of southern California's active faults, including all the major components of the southern San Andreas system. He has been a key participant in the Earthquake Geology Working Group, presently serves on the SCIGN Coordinating Board.

Other current UNR participants are Steve Wesnousky, director of the Center for Neotectonic Studies, and Jim Brune, director of the Seismological Laboratory at the Mackay School of Mines. The other main participants from SDSU are Professor Steve Day, member of the SCEC Steering Committee and chair of the High Performance Computing Committee, and Research Associate Harold Magistrale, active in SCEC for the past five years and developer of a widely applied seismic velocity model of southern California basins.
