Andrea Donnellan
SCIGN Scientist
 
As a research scientist in the Satellite
Geodesy and Geodynamics Systems (SGGS) Group, Andrea Donnellan is involved
in many research projects involving the use of GPS in studies of the earth's
crust.
Andrea was a key person involved with
the inception of SCIGN. Her research in the Ventura Basin just prior to
the Northridge earthquake helped spur the installation of the test network
of continuously recording GPS stations which eventually led to plans for
the 250-station network known as SCIGN. Andrea led the design effort of
the network and also chaired many of the proposal committees to get funding
for SCIGN.
She is currently involved in geodetic research of
crustal deformation here in Southern California as well as in Mongolia
and Antarctica. She is especially interested in using GPS data to measure
deformation related to the San Andreas fault, the Northridge
earthquake, and other areas in southern California. She then uses
the data to model fault processes in order to improve our understanding
of earthquake physics. Andrea has also worked
on the Altiplano in Bolivia and on the Variegated Glacier in Alaska.
She received her Ph.D. in Geophysics in 1991 and her
M.S. in Geophysics in 1988 from the California Institute of Technology.
She received a B.S. in Geology with a minor in mathematics from Ohio State
University in 1986. During her time at Ohio
State, she spent a summer working at Sohio's Research and Development
Laboratory.
She was a National Research Council Resident Research
Associate at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for two years before
joining SGGS Group at JPL in 1993. She has also been a Visiting Associate
in the Seismological Laboratory at Caltech.
Andrea has received numerous awards, including the
Presidential Early Career Award for Scientisist and Engineers. She is
a member of the American Geophysical Union and the Southern California
Earthquake Center Crustal Deformation Working Group. Andrea has also served
as a member of the SCIGN Coordinating Committee and as the Chair of the
UNAVCO field operations working group.
She also serves as an advisor to various students
on GPS related activies. When Andrea is not working, she enjoys ballet,
running, flying, and raising her son.
